Flank creates a dark area on the kukuri's flank, legs or tail. Within this area there are even darker spots.

Non-dominant Flank (nFl) can cover up to 50% of the permitted range, and the whole marking must be darker than the base color.

The dominant form (FlFl) may cover up to 90% of the permitted range, and the colors can be lighter or darker.

A Guide to Flank

Range

Flank is unique in how its range works. Flank can appear anywhere in the blue range (which covers the back half of the kukuri), but is constrained by the amount of that space it can cover. In non-dominant form, it can cover 50% of that range. Dominant can cover 90% of it.

Flank can be one large spot, or it can be many seperate patches.

Flank may use a large range of shapes and even mimic the shapes of other markings!

Piebald, Spotted, and Patched are all examples of shapes that can be mimicked by Flank. However it still can't create Hearts (without the Heart gene being present) or Runes.

While Flank can have many shapes, it does have some restrictions.

Flank can't appear too speckled or dotty, it also may not have holes without Break being present! In addition, Flank's inner spots must be hard edged. Soft or transparent spots are not allowed!

Flank also may not take on drastic shapes. While Flank can vary in shape wildly, it shouldn't be too thin, stripy, spotty, or have specific unnatural shapes!

Other rules

Flank spots have a few rules of their own:

- Flank spots should stay inside the Flank base.
- Flank spots should not create target like shapes. They cannot perfectly overlap with each other!
- The spots should appear evenly through the whole Flank base! There should not be any large empty spots!

Dominant Flank

When Flank becomes dominant (FlFl), the strict darker than color rule is lifted. The Flank base, Flank spots, or both may appear lighter than the base. Additionally the Flank spots can be mixed lighter and darker shades.

Should Flank touch the tip of the tail, dominant Flank can also create a band of black and white on the tip of the tail. These bands can reach 1/3rd down the tail.
